Character background and lore
Son Gohan is the eldest son of Son Goku and Chichi. Although he is naturally gentle and has little interest in fighting, his hybrid human-Saiyan heritage gives him exceptional potential, which is particularly evident when he is driven by anger or the desire to protect his loved ones.
Following the battle against Vegeta and Nappa, several of Earth’s defenders, including Piccolo, lost their lives. As Earth’s Dragon Balls had become unusable, Gohan accompanied Bulma and Krillin to the planet Namek to search for the local Dragon Balls and bring their friends back to life.
Upon their arrival, the three travellers discover that Frieza and his army are also searching for the Dragon Balls. Gohan and Krillin must therefore evade the tyrant’s soldiers, protect the inhabitants of Namek and gather the spheres before their adversaries do.
Gohan quickly distinguishes himself through his courage. In particular, he steps in to save the young Namekian Dende from Freeza’s men and takes part in several battles against members of the Galactic Army. His protective instinct regularly drives him to act despite the danger and his young age.
During his stay on Namek, the Grand Elder of the Namekians unlocks part of Gohan’s latent potential. This increase in power enables him to hold his own against far more experienced opponents and to survive the battles against the Ginyu Force.
During his battle with Recoome, Gohan is seriously injured but continues to fight until Goku arrives. This confrontation already illustrates his ability to push beyond his limits when his companions are threatened.
Facing Frieza, Gohan’s anger triggers several sudden bursts of power. Although he is still only a child and does not yet fully master his potential, he momentarily manages to take the tyrant by surprise and support his allies during a battle that is decisive for the future of Namek.
The Frieza Saga thus represents a crucial stage in the character’s development. The battles fought far from Earth strengthen his courage, experience and confidence, preparing the young warrior for the major role he will later play against the Androids and Cell.
