Food is one of life's great pleasures, and I'm a great believer in pleasure. Reading is also one of those activities that helps us to live better, so when you can combine the two... That's why I talk so much about food in my novels. When I read, as when I travel, I want to see the sights, smell the flowers and, of course, taste the food. Unlike the world of Westeros or daily life in the Middle Ages, the 21st century is a golden age, as far as food is concerned at least. We have it in abundance, we have easy access to food from every country in every season, and we can even buy the most exotic spices in the nearest grocery shop, at a price that won't force us to mortgage our castle.
