Origin and backstory of the characters (Lore)

Madagascar follows four star animals from New York’s Central Park Zoo: Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Gloria the hippopotamus and Melman the giraffe. Accustomed to the comforts of their environment, they find themselves accidentally transported to the island of Madagascar after Marty tries to explore the outside world.

Far from their everyday lives, the four friends must learn to survive in the wild and accept their differences. Alex, in particular, struggles with his predatory instincts, whilst Marty makes the most of the freedom he had been seeking. Gloria often acts as the group’s mediator, whilst Melman faces his many fears with unexpected courage.

The franchise is also known for the penguins Commander, Kowalski, Rico and Soldier, who specialise in complex plans and improvised operations. Their humour, combined with the complementary personalities of the main group, has made *Madagascar* one of DreamWorks’ most recognisable animated franchises.
