Character background and universe (Lore)
Stacker Pentecost is one of the key leaders of the Pan-Pacific Defence Corps, the international organisation tasked with fighting the Kaiju. These gigantic creatures emerge from an interdimensional rift at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and regularly attack coastal cities.
To counter this threat, humanity has developed the Jaegers: immense robots piloted simultaneously by two people. The pilots connect their minds via the Drift, a neural link that allows them to share their memories, reflexes and control of the machine.
Before becoming a marshal, Pentecost was himself a Jaeger pilot. He fought notably aboard Coyote Tango and gained significant experience in the field, which subsequently enabled him to understand the physical and psychological risks faced by the Rangers.
As the Jaeger programme is gradually phased out in favour of a gigantic coastal wall, Pentecost gathers the last remaining operational machines in Hong Kong’s Shatterdome. He prepares a final mission designed to close the breach once and for all and halt the arrival of the Kaiju.
He recruits former pilot Raleigh Becket, who is traumatised by his brother’s death in battle, and pairs him with Mako Mori, a young Ranger whom he took in following a Kaiju attack in Tokyo. Despite his protective attachment to Mako, Pentecost gradually realises that she possesses the necessary skills to pilot Gipsy Danger.
Stacker suffers from the effects of prolonged exposure to radiation caused by the first Jaegers, whose protective systems were less advanced. His health normally prevents him from returning to the Drift, but he nevertheless chooses to rejoin the fight when the situation becomes desperate.
He then pilots Striker Eureka alongside Chuck Hansen during the final assault on the breach. Their sacrifice weakens the Kaiju guarding the passage and gives Gipsy Danger the chance to continue the mission.
Through his leadership, courage and willingness to prioritise the survival of humanity over his own life, Stacker Pentecost becomes one of the central heroic figures of *Pacific Rim*.
