Origin and character background (Lore)

In *Violent Night*, released in 2022, Father Christmas is played by David Harbour. The film depicts an ageing, disillusioned Santa who, whilst on his Christmas Eve rounds, finds himself on the estate of a wealthy family being held hostage by a group of mercenaries. Stranded there, he decides to step in to protect the young Trudy, among others, gradually turning Christmas Eve into a full-blown action film.

This version of Father Christmas has a far more warlike past than his red costume would suggest. He reveals that he was once known as Nicomund the Red, a former warrior and particularly violent marauder. His favourite weapon was an imposing hammer nicknamed Skullcrusher, and his former fighting skills prove particularly useful when he has to face the mercenaries.

The character nevertheless retains the supernatural attributes associated with the real Father Christmas, notably his round of gift-giving, his reindeer and his ability to know who is on the list of good or naughty children. ‘Violent Night’ thus builds its identity on the contrast between the traditional Christmas narrative and an action-film hero, whilst giving Santa a journey centred on rediscovering his faith in the spirit of Christmas. This POP! No. 2149 captures precisely this interpretation of Santa Claus as seen in the film.
