Character background and universe (Lore)
Raleigh Becket is a Ranger with the Pan Pacific Defence Corps, the international organisation tasked with protecting humanity from the Kaiju. These gigantic creatures emerge from an interdimensional rift at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean and regularly attack coastal cities.
To combat this threat, nations have developed the Jaegers, immense robots piloted by two people. The pilots must synchronise their minds using the Drift, a neural connection that allows them to share their memories, emotions and control of the machine.
Raleigh initially pilots Gipsy Danger alongside his brother Yancy. The two men form a perfectly coordinated duo and secure several victories against the Kaiju before facing Knifehead during a mission off the coast of Alaska.
Yancy is killed during the battle, leaving Raleigh alone at the controls. Despite the trauma and the damage sustained by Gipsy Danger, he manages, remarkably, to pilot the Jaeger single-handedly and bring the machine back to shore.
Deeply affected by his brother’s death, Raleigh subsequently leaves the Jaeger programme and works on the construction of the coastal wall intended to replace the robots. Several years later, Marshal Stacker Pentecost tracks him down and asks him to return to the fray for one final operation.
Raleigh is then paired with Mako Mori, a highly talented young Ranger who is still inexperienced in the field. Their first Drift connection is difficult, as Mako’s traumatic memories disrupt their synchronisation, but the two pilots eventually build a relationship based on trust.
Together, they take the controls of Gipsy Danger once more and take part in the final assault on the breach. Raleigh stands out for his ability to improvise, his mental resilience and his determination to see the mission through despite the losses suffered by the PPDC.
