Character background and lore

Eddie Brock is a journalist whose career and reputation have taken a turn for the worse following a series of events he attributes in part to Spider-Man. This shared resentment towards the hero becomes a key factor when he encounters an alien organism known as the symbiote.

The symbiote had previously been bonded to Peter Parker. After being rejected by Spider-Man, it retains some of his abilities and also develops a deep resentment towards its former host. When it fuses with Eddie Brock, their emotions and objectives combine to give rise to Venom.

The union grants Eddie superhuman strength, considerable resilience, the ability to cling to surfaces and to produce organic filaments. The symbiote can also alter its appearance, form claws, create weapons and completely envelop its host in a protective black shell.

Venom is long portrayed as one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous enemies. Unlike many adversaries, he knows Peter Parker’s secret identity and does not trigger his spider-sense, making him particularly difficult to anticipate.

However, the relationship between Eddie and the symbiote evolves over the course of the stories. Their hatred of Spider-Man gradually gives way to a distinct moral code: Venom protects the innocent, but uses methods far more brutal than those of traditional heroes. This evolution allows him to become a fully-fledged anti-hero.

The split design of this POP! figure directly illustrates this duality. Eddie Brock retains part of his human appearance whilst Venom gradually takes possession of the other half of his body, embodying the physical and psychological bond that unites the host with his symbiote.
