Character background and lore

Dagger is the heroic alter ego of Tandy Bowen, a teenager from a privileged background but marked by a profound lack of affection. After running away from home, she meets Tyrone Johnson in New York. The two young runaways are kidnapped and then subjected against their will to an experiment involving a synthetic drug.

Tandy survives the experiment and develops the ability to produce luminous psionic energy. She can focus this light to form dagger-shaped projectiles, capable of injuring, weakening or purifying their targets.

Her powers also have a significant healing aspect. Dagger can use her light to heal certain wounds, eliminate toxic substances and restore a person’s vital energy. She is also an experienced dancer and acrobat, which enables her to fight with speed and precision.

Tyrone, meanwhile, becomes Cloak, a being connected to the Darkforce Dimension. His cloak enables him to absorb his opponents, render himself intangible and transport people through the darkness.

Cloak and Dagger’s powers are deeply complementary. The light produced by Tandy sates Tyrone’s hunger for life force, whilst Cloak’s darkness can absorb the excess light accumulated by Dagger. Their relationship is therefore emotional, heroic and truly symbiotic.

Together, they primarily fight drug traffickers, organised crime and those who exploit vulnerable young people. They also collaborate with several Marvel heroes, including Spider-Man, the Runaways and the X-Men.

In Marvel Rivals, Cloak and Dagger form a single playable character belonging to the Strategist class. The player can switch between Tandy and Tyrone to adapt their abilities to the team’s needs.

Dagger uses her light projectiles to deal damage or restore her allies’ health. She can also create a barrier of light and summon a special dagger that heals team members within its area of effect.

Cloak complements this with powers of teleportation, stealth and debuffing. This interplay between light and darkness allows the duo to support their team whilst actively participating in combat.

In the game’s story, a temporal distortion strikes Cloak and Dagger as they traverse the Darkforce Dimension. They reappear in a New York plunged into eternal night and ruled by Dracula, where they join the resistance against his empire.
