Origin and world of the character (Lore)
Princess Aurora is the heroine of Disney Studios' sixteenth animated feature film, Sleeping Beauty, released in 1959. Stricken at birth by a terrible curse from the evil fairy Maleficent, she is condemned to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die on her sixteenth birthday, a fate fortunately alleviated into a deep sleep by the fairy Pimprenelle. This diorama perfectly captures the film's aesthetic opposition: Aurore's innocent grace in the foreground is set against Maleficent's menacing shadow, frozen in the stained glass motifs as a constant reminder of the tragic fate hanging over the young girl.
