Origin and world of the character
The Bent Neck Lady character comes from the fantasy and horror anthology TV series The Haunting of Hill House, created and directed by Mike Flanagan for Netflix in 2018. The work is a loose adaptation of the famous gothic novel The Haunted House by American author Shirley Jackson, published in 1959. The plot alternates between past and present to follow the traumas of the five siblings of the Crain family, haunted by memories of paranormal events experienced during their childhood in the mysterious Hill House mansion. Within the story, the Lady with the Bent Neck is a terrifying spectre with a broken figure who particularly torments young Eleanor 'Nell' Crain from an early age. She embodies one of the most tragic and important mysteries in the series, symbolising fate, grief and the temporal trauma that inextricably links the members of the family to the fate of the house.
