Meet Smaug, the fearsome dragon of the Lonely Mountain, with this Funko POP! Deluxe No. 2188 figurine inspired by The Hobbit. This Metallic edition depicts the dragon perched on a portion of his immense hoard, surrounded by gold coins, in a more elaborate display than that of a classic POP! figure. Funko states the figure is approximately 17.3 cm tall.

The design captures Smaug’s dark red silhouette, his large folded wings, his horns, his yellow eyes and his golden-hued belly. The dragon is depicted sitting atop his hoard, with several gold coins and precious objects visible around his paws. The metallic finish accentuates the figure’s shimmer and complements the treasure of Erebor that forms its base particularly well. 

Made from PVC/vinyl, this figurine is in the POP! Deluxe format, featuring a more substantial design that incorporates Smaug and his hoard of riches into a single display piece. Character background and lore

Smaug is one of the most powerful dragons of the Third Age of Middle-earth. Lured by the immense riches amassed by the Dwarves of Erebor, he attacked the Lonely Mountain and the neighbouring town of Dale in the year 2770 of the Third Age. He drove the Dwarves from their kingdom, seized Thrór’s treasure — including, notably, the Arkenstone — and remained for nearly two centuries in the heart of the mountain, lying upon his gigantic hoard of gold.

In 2941, Thorin Oakenshield led a company of Dwarves to Erebor to reclaim the kingdom of his ancestors. Bilbo Baggins, hired as a burglar, entered the mountain and encountered Smaug. During their confrontation, Bilbo discovers that a small area on the dragon’s chest is not protected by his scales or the fragments of precious stones that cover the rest of his belly.

Furious at Bilbo’s intrusion, Smaug leaves Erebor to attack Lake-town (Esgaroth). However, news of his weak spot reaches Bard, who slays the dragon by shooting his Black Arrow into the vulnerable area of his chest. Smaug’s death enables Thorin and his company to reclaim the treasure of Erebor, whilst also triggering the tensions that will subsequently lead to the Battle of the Five Armies.

In Peter Jackson’s film trilogy, Smaug plays a central role in *The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug* and is voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch. This POP! Deluxe No. 2188 faithfully recreates the iconic image of the dragon perched atop the riches of the Lonely Mountain, whilst the metallic finish visually highlights the gold and treasures that Smaug has made his lair.
