Origin and character lore

Thorin II Oakenshield is the son of Thráin II, the grandson of Thrór and an heir to the prestigious House of Durin. After the dragon Smaug seized Erebor and its vast treasure, the Dwarves of the Lonely Mountain were forced into exile. Thorin subsequently became the leader of the people of Durin and harboured the ambition to reclaim his family’s ancestral kingdom.

In the year 2941 of the Third Age, Thorin leads a company of twelve other Dwarves, accompanied by Bilbo Baggins and Gandalf the Grey, on an expedition to Erebor. Bilbo is recruited as a burglar to help the company gain entry to the Lonely Mountain. During the journey, Thorin also comes into possession of Orcrist, an ancient Elven blade from Gondolin that is particularly feared by Orcs.

After Smaug’s death, Thorin finally reclaims Erebor and briefly becomes King under the Mountain. However, his attachment to the treasure, and in particular to the Arkenstone, leads to a conflict with the Men of Lake-town and the Elves of Mirkwood. The arrival of an Orc army ultimately forces the Dwarves, Elves and Men to join forces in the Battle of the Five Armies.

Thorin is seriously wounded during this battle and dies after reconciling with Bilbo. His cousin Dáin Ironfoot succeeds him as King under the Mountain and permanently restores the Dwarven kingdom of Erebor. This POP! Metallic No. 2187 thus pays tribute to one of the central characters of *The Hobbit* and to the ruler who devoted his life to reclaiming the kingdom of his ancestors.
