Origin and world of the character
The character of Hal L. comes from the cult sports comedy Happy Gilmore, directed by Dennis Dugan and released in 1996. Starring Adam Sandler, the film follows a failed hockey player who takes up professional golf to save his grandmother's house. Played by actor Ben Stiller (in a memorable but originally uncredited appearance), Hal L. is the Machiavellian, moustachioed head nurse at the nursing home where Happy's grandmother lives. Taking advantage of the absence of the family, he runs the home like a forced labour camp for the elderly, forcing them to make quilts at gunpoint. His obnoxious, fake-sweet behaviour in front of the cameras makes him one of the most hilarious, memorable and cult secondary antagonists in Adam Sandler's filmography.
