Character background and universe (Lore)

In Battlestar Galactica, ‘Six’ refers to a series of humanoid Cylon models that share an identical physical appearance but are capable of developing different personalities, memories and beliefs. Their perfect resemblance to humans allows them to infiltrate the Twelve Colonies without arousing suspicion.

One of the most significant versions of Six has a relationship with the scientist Gaius Baltar on Caprica. By gaining his trust, she gains access to the colonial defence systems and facilitates their sabotage. This infiltration enables the Cylons to launch a massive attack on the Colonies and is one of the series’ key triggering events.

After the destruction of Caprica, Baltar continues to see a vision of Six that only he seems to perceive. This apparition, often referred to as Head Six, advises him, manipulates him and steers him towards a spiritual interpretation of events. Her true nature remains unclear for a long time: is she a hallucination, a Cylon implant or a manifestation of a higher power?

Other instances of the Six model follow very different paths. Caprica Six, in particular, develops genuine feelings for Baltar and gradually begins to question the Cylons’ policy of extermination. Gina Inviere, meanwhile, is discovered aboard the Pegasus, where she suffers severe abuse following the revelation of her identity.

Through her various incarnations, Six embodies the increasingly blurred line between human and machine. Her capacity to love, to believe, to suffer and to choose her own side directly challenges the way in which the survivors view their Cylon enemies.
