Origin and character background (Lore)

Rilakkuma is a Japanese character created in 2003 by designer Aki Kondo for the company San-X. His name combines the English word ‘relax’ with the Japanese term ‘kuma’, which means ‘bear’. One day, he turns up at the flat of Kaoru, a young office worker living in Tokyo, and decides to move in without offering much explanation.

A great lover of naps, television, music and treats such as pancakes and dango, Rilakkuma prefers to lead a peaceful life without worrying about daily obligations. A zip on his back suggests he is wearing a bear costume, but the identity of the person or creature inside remains a mystery.

He shares his daily life with Korilakkuma, a mischievous little white bear, and Kiiroitori, a serious little yellow chick who regularly takes care of the housework. Through their simple and heart-warming adventures, the Rilakkuma characters celebrate rest, kindness and the importance of taking one’s time.
