Rilakkuma is a Japanese fictional character created in 2003 by designer Aki Kondo for the San-X company. His name is a combination of the Japanese pronunciation of the English word relax and the word kuma (bear). The story goes that he unexpectedly takes up residence in the flat of a young Tokyo employee called Kaoru. Rilakkuma is a self-confessed sloth, spending his days sleeping, watching TV, listening to music or eating pancakes and dango. Unusually, he has a zip on his back which reveals that he is actually wearing a bear costume, although what's inside remains a mystery. He shares his daily life with the little white bear Korilakkuma and the yellow chick Kiiroitori.
