Character background and universe (Lore)

Sumikko Gurashi is a universe created by San-X centred on shy little creatures who prefer to live in quiet corners. Rather than taking centre stage or drawing attention to themselves, the Sumikkos seek out discreet spaces where they can feel safe.

Shirokuma, whose name literally means ‘polar bear’, comes from the cold northern regions. Contrary to what his appearance might suggest, he finds the cold hard to bear. Shy around strangers, he left his homeland in search of a milder climate and a place where he could live peacefully.

Shirokuma feels particularly at ease when he can enjoy a cup of hot tea in a quiet corner. This habit sums up his calm and cautious nature: he prefers comforting activities, familiar surroundings and the company of his loved ones to overly lively situations.

He often travels with Furoshiki, a piece of pink polka-dot fabric which he uses to carry his belongings, make himself comfortable or cover himself up. This accessory has become one of the character’s defining features, although it is not depicted on this figurine.

Like the other members of Sumikko Gurashi, Shirokuma has a vulnerability that makes him particularly endearing. Penguin? doubts his identity, Neko lacks confidence in his appearance, Tokage hides his true nature and Tonkatsu fears being left out. Together, they find in their friendship and in quiet corners a reassuring environment where everyone can be accepted just as they are.
