Character background and universe (Lore)

Sumikko Gurashi is a universe created by San-X centred on shy little creatures who prefer to stay in quiet corners rather than be the centre of attention. The franchise’s name combines Japanese terms meaning ‘corner’ and ‘daily life’, summing up the behaviour of its characters.

Penguin? — the question mark is officially part of the name — looks like a green penguin, but isn’t sure if he really is one. He regularly wonders what his true nature is and lacks self-confidence. In particular, he thinks he remembers that there used to be a sort of plate on his head, a detail that is more reminiscent of Japanese kappa folklore than of a real penguin.

This constant uncertainty explains his hesitant expression and his sometimes wary nature. Penguin? nevertheless enjoys the company of the other Sumikkos and shares with them the need to find a quiet, reassuring place. Like his friends, he feels most at ease when he can stay quietly tucked away in a corner.

Each of the characters in *Sumikko Gurashi* has a worry or a quirk that makes them imperfect, yet endearing. Shirokuma can’t stand the cold, Neko is shy and self-conscious, Tonkatsu is a piece of cutlet left on a plate, whilst Tokage hides his true identity as a dinosaur. Penguin? fits naturally into this group thanks to his own self-doubts and his need to be accepted just as he is.
